Celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the birth of Nelson’s First Lieutenant
This set of six stamps chronicles the life and achievements of one of the Isle of Man’s greatest figures, Captain John Quilliam who was born 250 years ago on 29th September 1771 in the village of Marown. Having served as first lieutenant on the HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, Quilliam’s career at sea tells a fascinating tale of a Manxman’s travels around the world.
The stamps have been designed by Quilliam Society member and artist Colleen Corlett who brings Quilliam's story to life using utilising photographs, portraits, statues and images of Quilliam memorabilia. Colleen has used a combination of digital and hand-painted content in addition to historical imagery she has included roundels on each stamp which are a mixture of portraits and relevant medallions and coins. The issue text has been written by Frank Cowin, who, alongside Andrew Bond and Andrew Lambert, is the co-author of Favourite of Fortune, Captain John Quilliam, Hero of Trafalgar, the book for which the collection is named after.
