ISLE OF MAN POST OFFICE PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE APOLLO MISSIONS AND THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST MANNED FLIGHT TO LAND ON THE MOON

On April 29th Isle of Man Post Office issues a set of eight stamps to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the first manned flight to land on the Moon.

The text for our issue was written by George Abbey, former Director of the Johnson Space Center, who was involved in the Apollo Programme, was responsible for all space shuttle flight crews and put America's first woman in space. Mr Abbey was not only kind enough to write the history of the Apollo missions, he also spent time with our designers during the research phase; his personal experience and insight on important mission facts was instrumental in the structure of the stamps and the choice of images supplied by NASA. We are incredibly grateful for his assistance. Mr Abbey is very fond of the Isle of Man and its Celtic traditions and has visited many times. In 2007 he became the first Senior Fellow of the International Institute of Space Commerce on the Isle of Man.
