Post Office helps send clothes parcel to Nepalese orphanage

A bumper parcel full of clothes has been distributed to children in need living in an orphanage in Nepal thanks to the help of Isle of Man Post Office's Sponsorship Committee.

The Helpless Children Mother Centre orphanage in Kathmandu is a charity aimed at helping orphans by providing them with the daily essentials of food and shelter. It also strives to develop the children's academic, social, mental and physical abilities so that they can stand on their own two feet.

Manxman Mike Quayle has been involved in helping the orphanage for more than 10 years having come across the charity while on an organised trek. Ever since he's travelled out to Nepal twice a year to visit the orphanage to help them in whatever way he can. Ahead of his latest trip, Mike was offered a considerable amount of new but surplus children's sweatshirts and polo shirts by the School Uniform Shop and Promenade T-shirts. However, he faced the difficulty of transporting the 20kg of items out to Nepal for distribution and contacted the Isle of Man Post Office Sponsorship Committee to see if they could offer any assistance.

Mike said: "Fortunately Isle of Man Post Office came to the rescue in super quick time and arranged transportation to the central Post Office in Kathmandu. From there I was able to collect and distribute to the orphanage as well as to children living in the hill village of Dhankuta and some very poor local families in Kathmandu itself. I am most grateful to Isle of Man Post Office for this enormous help as the look on the children's faces when you open the parcel and they see they have some clothing is just priceless. It means the world to them to know that people care."

Sita Maya Sherpa, Chairman of the Helpless Children Mother Centre, said: "We would like to say that we really appreciated the kind assistance and help to the children for their good future."

Lucy Webster-Thompson, Chairman of Isle of Man Post Office Sponsorship Committee said: "We were delighted to support Mike in his gallant efforts to help the orphaned children by sending them much needed clothes. The Sponsorship Committee aims to support a variety of local initiatives throughout the year and is always keen to hear from individuals and organisations looking for support which we may be able to help with."
