Isle of Man Post Office Protects Island‑Wide Postal Services as Agency Needs Evolve

Isle of Man Post Office (IOMPO) is today sharing the next steps in the evolution of its Island‑wide retail counter network, changes designed to make sure that postal services remain accessible, reliable and sustainable for the communities who depend on them every day.

For many people, their local post office is more than a service point, it’s part of daily life. That’s why IOMPO is shaping its network so it reflects what customers need now, and long into the future.

These updates, which come into effect on 1 April 2026, follow a significant shift in how customers choose to interact along with new regulatory requirements, and recent decisions by Government departments, including the withdrawal of vehicle and driving licence services from the end of March.

Keeping Postal Services Accessible Across the Island

No matter where you live, customers will continue to be able to access postal services locally and still pay by cash or card.

Many of IOMPO’s retail partners have agreed to offer postal services for longer each day, giving customers more choice about when they access them. This goes hand in hand with growing demand for Online Postage, including free doorstep collection and an expanding range of convenient digital options.

To ensure the right level of service in each area, the postal counters in Willaston, Union Mills and Royal Avenue will focus on the services most used by residents in those communities.

In central Onchan and Foxdale, the current providers have made business decisions not to continue. IOMPO will therefore seek alternative solutions, and throughout that process the priority is clear: to maintain continuity of service for the people who rely on them.

Agency Counter Services: Supporting Those Who Still Need In‑Person Help

With the withdrawal of driving and vehicle licensing transactions, three agency services will continue to be delivered by IOMPO:

  • the Payment Exception Service (formerly MiCard)
  • Bill payments
  • Treasury cheque encashment

To ensure customers receive consistent, compliant support from trained staff, these in‑person services will be available from the five locations where the Payment Exception Service already operates: Douglas, Peel, Port Erin, Castletown and Ramsey. This means customers who still need face‑to‑face support will receive it in the right environment, while reflecting the much‑reduced number of people now using these services across the Island. Foreign exchange services will continue to be offered in these locations, including Castletown for the first time, as well as at IOMPO Headquarters in Douglas.

Stu Peters MHK, Chairman of Isle of Man Post Office, said: “We know how important local postal services are to Island life. These changes are about protecting those services for the long term, while recognising how customers now choose to use them. By evolving our network in this way, we are keeping services accessible in every community, supporting our retail partners, and making sure the Post Office remains sustainable and fit for the future.”
