Isle of Man Post Office and Manx National Heritage Celebrate Milestone Anniversary

The Manx Museum is the Island’s national museum, and with this set of stamps we invite you to delve into the archives of the museum and discover the wonder of Manx history.

The museum is unique in that it only holds artefacts with direct links to our Island’s history and heritage, and when it first opened its doors in 1922, it sought to engage and inspire with the artefacts on display, ten of which are pictured on this collection of stamps.

From their collection, Manx National Heritage have chosen a selection of a wide range of subjects for this issue. These include: the oldest surviving Manx motor vehicle, an eight horsepower Renault; a King Sihtric Coin, one of the earliest coins to be minted on the Isle of Man; and a Pygmy Shrew taxidermy – the smallest mammal on Earth and inhabitants of the Island.

Connie Lovel, Executive Director for Manx National Heritage said:

“Manx National Heritage is delighted to have worked with Isle of Man Post Office to create this stunning stamp collection, which perfectly captures the essence of our 100th anniversary celebrations at the Manx Museum.  During the centenary year, the community are invited to join the celebrations through 100 objects in the Museum 100 exhibition, 10 of which are pictured within this stunning stamp collection”.

Chris Thomas MHK, Chair of Isle of Man Post Office commented: “This collection is engaging and inspiring, just as the Manx Museum has been for so many for a century, and the stamps will be treasured, just as our national museum has cared for the riches of Manx history. Each of the ten stamps is wonderful, but my favourites are the one depicting Rebecca Noble laying the foundation stone of the original Noble’s Hospital in 1886, the building which was creatively reused for the Manx Museum from 1922, the 1964 Carmine-Red Definitive Stamp and the Pygmy Shrew one. I could not believe how small but beautiful this mammal is.”

The ‘Manx Museum 100’ collection is available as Set and Sheet Set, Sheetlet, Presentation Pack and as First Day Cover. As an additional product this collection is available as a self-adhesive booklet of 10 stamps.
